The main post office of Cologne was in the street "An den Dominikanern" in the Altstadt-Nord district of the city center .

The building of the Oberpostdirektion Köln of the Reichspost , erected at the instigation of the Wilhelmine general post director Heinrich von Stephan , was built on the foundation walls of the Dominican monastery in Cologne in the style of historicism and opened in 1893. The original facade of the building had to be renovated in a simplified form in the 1920s due to structural damage. Heavily damaged during the Second World War in 1943, it was completely renovated and rebuilt with a simplified ashlar facade .

The Oberpostdirektion Köln of the Prussian Rhine Province was responsible for the administrative district of Cologne and the former administrative district of Aachen. As a result of the privatization of the Deutsche Bundespost (“ postal reform ”), these tasks were transferred to the directorates of the individual new postal services.

The building was demolished in 1998 for the new construction of an exclusive senior citizen's residence, whereby the monument protection had no objections due to the strongly changed basic substance of the historical building.
