Maputo main post office
The main post office of Maputo , in Portuguese "Estação central dos Correios de Maputo", is located in a building opened in 1907 on Avenida 25 de Setembro in the Mozambican capital Maputo .
history
At the end of the 19th century, the Royal Portuguese Post Office CTT commissioned the architect Carlos Machado to design a new main post office in Lourenço Marques, capital of the Portuguese colony of Mozambique. Machado designed a "T" -shaped, two-story building with the main front facing southwest. The front has an arcade-like corridor with five arches with three central pillars and two corner pillars that support a balcony.
Between 1944 and 1945, the post office was expanded according to plans by the architect António Rodrigues da Silva .
Until 1975 the Portuguese state post office CTT resided in the building , which was responsible for both post and telecommunications. Since the independence of Mozambique, the building has been the seat of the state postal company Correios de Moçambique . Since the postal service is relatively limited, the state waterworks and the BCI bank have taken over part of the customer counters in recent years and have been offering their services there since then.
Since 2011 the building has been in the preselection for a list of monuments for the city of Maputo. The building is registered with the number 31,352 in the Portuguese monument database Sistema de Informação para o Património Arquitectónico , which also includes monuments from former Portuguese colonies.
