history

In 1874 Hubert Grafer built the house for his large family. Before the Second World War, a kind of workers' pub was located in the Hammerstein house. During the war, Haus Hammerstein fed Russian forced laborers who had to work in nearby factories and who were also housed nearby. From the 1950s to the 1970s, it experienced its heyday as a nationwide known and renowned hotel and excursion restaurant. In the book have, among other Inge Meysel , Antje Weisgerber , Lisa della Casa , Peter Frankenfeld and Anneliese Rothenberger entered. Mephisto actor Gustaf Gründgens moved into the hotel for two years. Political celebrities also spent time in the hotel, for example, Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Kohl were among the guests. Economics Minister Ludwig Erhard , Finance Minister Franz Etzel , the President of the World Bank Eugene Black and Karl Blessing from the Bundesbank even resided together on the Wupper.

In 1985 the owner at that time, Herta Horn, a granddaughter of the builder Hubert Grafer, sold the Hammerstein house on the condition that it should go to a non-profit organization. In December 1985 it was bought by the Landesverband der Lebenshilfe Nordrhein-Westfalen eV for 1.5 million DM as an educational and recreational facility for advanced training, seminars, conferences and other events. In addition to the installation of an elevator to make the first floor barrier-free, a large part of the hotel equipment was taken over and integrated; Today, some pieces of furniture from the hotel era give the house a special charm.

Lebenshilfe Nordrhein-Westfalen eV initially tried to preserve the historic character of the house and, if possible, to fit necessary modifications into a coherent overall picture. By mid-2006, the house had been equipped with various necessary innovations in the area of fire protection . A guest room wing on the upper floor with dormer windows was enlarged and expanded. The house now also has a small indoor swimming pool with a wellness area that is barrier-free.

Some teams from the 2006 World Cup for people with disabilities stayed in Haus Hammerstein in September 2006.

Since mid-2008 there has been a bistro / café with a terrace and boat rental in the basement. The landing stage at the Wuppertalsperre in front of the house is barrier-free.

Since 2014, civil weddings can also be carried out in Haus Hammerstein.

On July 1, 2020, Lebenshilfe Nordrhein-Westfalen eV announced that it wanted to sell the house. This was justified with high investment costs in fire protection, which the non-profit association cannot afford. Due to the Corona decrees of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, the house was closed in March 2020 and then not reopened. Lebenshilfe is now planning to sell it to a non-profit organization.
