The house of Philipp Orth was an important monument in Heilbronn . It was one of the buildings within the Maulbronn court , which dates back to the Franconian royal court and was inhabited by Heilbronn patricians as a Maulbronn fief from the 14th century.

history

The Orth family came to Heilbronn in 1533 through the marriage of Philipp Orth (1509–1555) with a daughter of the Heilbronn merchant Schirnagel and owned the Maulbronn court through this connection. The builder Philipp Orth was the father of the eponymous mayor Philipp Orth II (1534-1603) and in 1551 left the Orth'sche house in the northwest corner of the Maulbronner Hof (formerly Kramstrasse, later Kaiserstrasse 20) in Franconian half-timbered construction on a stone ground floor Build the remains of a stone house. The council minutes speak of the house "on the burned down". This could mean the old Heilbronn town hall , which burned down in 1535, on the corner of Kaiserstraße and Mosergasse.

The stone façade of the previous building facing Kaiserstraße was no longer there and so the half-timbered façade of the Orth'schen new building was erected between the two remaining Staufer walls on the side . The house is easy to see on old photos. It was the only house in Kaiserstraße near Kasernengasse that was "wedged" between old walls to the right and left of the house and, based on an old agreement, was allowed to protrude further into Kaiserstraße than the other houses. Even when the house was being built, there had been protracted arguments about the overhanging upper floors and a bay window that extended far into the street. The bay window was demolished in 1864 at the request of the city. Until 1901 there was a Gothic cross vault on the stone ground floor, which was then torn down when it was converted into the Zügel fashion store .

The converted house was destroyed in the air raid on Heilbronn in 1944. During excavations in 1951, the foundations of the Staufer stone house were proven again.
