Monument protection

Before the house was placed under protection, the current owners carried out a comprehensive renovation of the building in 1978. Haus Steeg is a prime example of a private initiative to preserve a building steeped in history.

Historical background

Little is known about the builders of Haus Steeg, but what is certain is that it was built in 1577/78. According to a dendrochronological report, the half-timbered house is one of the oldest half-timbered houses in the Bergisches Land. The name of Haus Steeg can be explained just as clearly: The first name of this homestead was “zum Stegh”, just like the parcel to the right and left of the Sülz. This means a narrow pedestrian bridge that connected the Rambrücker mill and the village of Rambrücken.

It is known of the families living in Haus Steeg that the farm owner Johann Heinrich had his son baptized in 1682 in the Augustinian monastery in Rösrath. Johann Heinrich, although not literate, was also a lay judge. His great-grandson Franz Wilhelm Gammersbach studied law and established himself as a lawyer in Haus Steeg. In 1808, during the " French era ", he was appointed the first mayor of the " Municipality " of Rösrath. In 1812 he experienced an attack by resistance fighters in his mayor's office in Haus Steeg, who destroyed some of the French files. Gammersbach remained mayor in Prussian times, but in 1830 he moved his official residence to Haus Venauen . From 1680 to 1835 four generations of the Gammersbach family lived in Haus Steeg. In 1837 the house became the property of the Schwamborn family, who founded a tannery in Rambrücken from Haus Steeg.

In 1964 the current owners moved into Haus Steeg.
