Haus Vogelsang is a listed residential building in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Krefeld . It is located in the Baackeshof district at Moylandstrasse 23 on Liedbergplatz. The building, which was built in 1950 according to plans by the architect Bernhard Pfau , is an architecturally significant testimony to modern architecture in the early German post-war period .

History and description

The building was built as a country house between 1949 and 1950 according to plans by Bernhard Pfau for the Krefeld engineer Richard Vogelsang, who works in the silk industry. It was conceived as a suburban residential building surrounded by gardens and located near the center of Krefeld. The building is a simple two-story white cube with a flat roof in the New Objectivity style . In its design, it ties in with the important buildings in Krefeld in the Bauhaus style from the 1920s and 1930s. At the time of its construction, Vogelsang House sparked controversial discussions. From an urban point of view, the building did not fit in with the customary ideas for the location, as it was viewed as too flat and cubic, as well as having too many windows. For these reasons, the Krefeld building authorities arranged for the house to be built further away from the street.

While the compact cube shapes predominate on the street side, there are more openings and glazing on the garden side. There are terraces in the south and east. There is also a roof terrace on the upper floor. The house has 210 m² of living space. On the ground floor, the living rooms are laid out in a large open floor plan structure and have been preserved in their original structure. The built-in cabinets and room dividers from Haus Vogelsang were also designed by Bernhard Pfau and have largely been preserved in their original form. The black natural asphalt floors and steps have also been preserved.

Richard Vogelsang lived in the building with his wife Elsie until his death in 1986. In 2006, the architect Marcus Wrede and his wife Lisa acquired the now run-down Vogelsang house and renovated it until 2007 in accordance with a listed building. For this, the couple received the monument award of the LVR Office for Monument Preservation in the Rhineland on November 2, 2008 for the restoration of an endangered monument.

House Vogelsang is registered as an architectural monument in the list of monuments of the city of Krefeld under number 625 .
