The House of History Wittenberg in Lutherstadt Wittenberg is a museum that shows the history of the 20th century in 20 originally designed living rooms.

history

The House of History was created on the initiative of the PFLUG eV association, which was founded in 1992. The association originally dealt with everyday life in the 20th century. The aspects of the environment and society played a primary role. In addition, the association shed light on cultural-historical research on the living conditions of women in the 20th century. As part of an ABM project, people began to collect objects from everyday life at that time. The work concentrated particularly on the period from 1910 to the end of the GDR . Specialist conferences were held on the comprehensive topic and exhibitions were organized in the vicinity of Lutherstadt Wittenberg.

The collection of everyday objects as well as clothing, furniture and kitchen equipment became gradually more extensive, and the idea arose to present them in a permanent exhibition from a scientific point of view in living environments. For this purpose, the House of History was opened on October 11, 1997 in the leased rooms of a former kindergarten at Wittenberger Schlossstrasse 6. The motto of the first exhibition was "Ciu, ciu, ciu, coo - there are pigs' ears in the HO ...". It shed light on everyday life in Lutherstadt Wittenberg from 1945 to 1960.

Other theme-specific special exhibitions expanded the range of the house. Among other things, Expo projects were supported. In the following years, more exhibition space was gradually gained in the house. The entire house has been available to the museum for use since 2003. This made it possible to present the living environments of the 1920s to 1980s on three floors.

Exhibition concept

Starting with the kitchen of the 1920s, through refugee rooms and "parlor" of the 1940s and the living room with kidney-shaped table from the 1950s, you get to the GDR living space. The village pub, a dance bar, a youth room from the 1980s and a village Konsum can also be seen here. The exhibition concept deals with everyday history, both during the Weimar Republic and in the post-war period and the GDR. The objective everyday history is presented in the historical-scientific context.

The research required for this enabled the house to set up an archive with an extensive collection of photos, documents and material evidence. In addition, a biographical archive was created with the documentation of reports that contemporary witnesses gave in interviews. Due to the central location of the building in the middle of the old town of Wittenberg, the House of History Wittenberg became a tourist attraction. Visitors from all federal states and international guests frequent the house.
