The imposing building in the center of Stuttgart was built in 1889–1896 to a design by the architect Skjøld Neckelmann (1854–1903) as a state trade museum for the Royal Central Office for Trade and Commerce and opened with an “Exhibition for Electrical Engineering and Applied Arts”. The inauguration took place in the presence of King Charles I on June 6, 1896. The building originally served primarily as an exhibition building. From 1952 it housed the Baden-Württemberg State Trade Office and during this time the interior was largely converted into an office building. 1986–1990 it was thoroughly renovated and rebuilt, since then it has been called the House of Business .
