House of the German East

The House of the German East ( HDO ) is an institution of the Free State of Bavaria in Munich and serves to maintain and further develop the cultural heritage of Germans from Central and Eastern Europe . It was founded in 1970.

The House of the German East is a non-incorporated public institution that is subordinate to the Bavarian State Ministry for Labor and Social Affairs, Family and Integration . It is headed by a director (including Horst Kühnel until 2001, from 2002 to 2012 Ortfried Kotzian ). An advisory board , consisting of twenty personalities from cultural, economic and political life, supports the director in his work. Andreas Otto Weber has been Director of the House of the German East since May 1, 2013 .

tasks

The facility fulfills various tasks within the framework of the Federal Expellees Act .

The HDO is supposed to

  • Maintain and develop the contribution of the former German settlement areas in Eastern and Southeastern Europe to German culture
  • Perform a bridging function for the relationship between the Free State of Bavaria and Eastern and Southeastern Europe
  • support German minorities in their home countries in maintaining their cultural identity
  • Conduct events
  • promote the transfer of knowledge about Eastern and Southeastern Europe in the field of education
  • support relevant associations, institutions and individual measures at home and abroad

Library

The HDO has a public library on the past and present of the German settlement areas in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The library has a stock of 80,000 volumes.

Others

The HDO serves as a meeting place for around 120 groups. There are conference rooms and the non-public restaurant Zum Alten Bezirksamt available.

The Association of Patrons of the House of German East Munich eV supports the cultural work of the HDO financially.
