The House of Travel is a listed building on the Alexanderplatz in Berlin district of Mitte . It was inaugurated in 1971 and is located at Alexanderstraße 7 (until June 2006 the address was Alexanderplatz 5 ).
history
The 18-storey, 67-meter-high House of Travel was built from September 12, 1969 to October 26, 1971 during the socialist redesign of the square near the previously demolished Minolhaus . The construction plans come from Roland Korn , Johannes Brieske and Roland Steiger. The interior design was the responsibility of Hans Bogatzky . Until the political change, the building housed the head office of the travel agency of the German Democratic Republic and offices of Interflug . The counters for air traffic and rail traffic for Germany and abroad were located on the ground floor. The central foreigner service of the travel agency with the foreigner registration service of the German People's Police and an exchange office of the industrial and commercial bank were on duty for foreign guests day and night. There was also a small espresso with 60 seats, a small bar and 40 seats outside. After the political change, nothing has been preserved from the original interior .
According to the master plan adopted by the Senate in 1993 for Alexanderplatz, the Haus des Reisens was to make way for one of the 150-meter-high buildings planned by Hans Kollhoff . As a result, the house was not extensively renovated; the owner - Alexanderplatz 5 GbR - announced in the early 2000s that they wanted to implement the Kollhoff plans, and HypoVereinsbank was named as a possible tenant . It is unclear whether these plans will continue to be pursued (status: end of 2014).
From May 2000, the Haus des Reisens housed the Stern Radio club on the ground floor , which was closed in July 2007. The Skyclub has been located in these rooms since 2010 . Club Week End was founded on the 12th floor in early 2005 . Since the 2010s it has also been located on the 15th floor and uses a specially furnished roof terrace.
FitX has been running a fitness studio in the building since March 2015 .
architecture
The House of Travel is the tallest building on Alexanderplatz after the hotel high-rise and is almost as high as the Red Town Hall . There is a flat, two-story building around the high-rise.
On the eastern facade, at the level of the second floor, is the copper drifting work Man Overcoming Time and Space, a work by the artist Walter Womacka , who also designed the fountain of friendship between nations and the frieze at the teacher's house . This relief measures 24 meters × 5 meters.
Since the building impresses with extraordinary architectural details (the curtain wall consists of an aluminum construction, the two-storey base is closed off by wave-shaped plastic shells) and represents an important testimony to the international architecture of the 1970s, it has been a listed building since July 2015 .
