location

The cave is located north of the Vils at the southern end of the Schlossberg, on which the Kallmünz castle ruins stand. history

The house without a roof with forge on a painting by Franz Skarbina (1849–1910)

The oldest known mention of the cave dwelling can be found in a document kept in the land register archive in Amberg with the year 1707. In the 19th century it was also referred to as the “house under the rock”. In 1908 it was sold to the owner of the forge in front of it on the road, in whose family it is still owned. The last permanent resident left the house in 1937 because he suffered from rheumatism from the damp cave air .

In the meantime, a roof has been erected inside the house to prevent water from entering. But this roof is not visible from the outside.

description

The house without a roof consists of a natural cave in the dolomite rock, the opening of which is closed by a plastered wall with door and windows. Inside there is a corridor, a living room, two storage rooms fitted into rock niches and a historic smokehouse .

Varia

In the novel, Rosalie by Berni Mayer the story takes place at a time and in the house without a roof.

This house shows how the primeval tradition of the “resting place under the rock” has been preserved in modern times by some settlements.
