The Haus zum Spiegel on Jakobistraße in Soest is a listed patrician house . The current building from 1696 goes back to a medieval predecessor. Today the city archive and the city archeology are housed there.

history

A stone building at this point was first mentioned in a document in 1446. According to an inscription, the current building in the Baroque style dates from 1696. This makes it one of the few stone buildings in the city from the Baroque period. The patrician building belonged to different families in the 17th and 18th centuries, such as von Affeln, von Klenke, von Offerhaus and von Dolffs. In the 19th century it belonged temporarily to the postman Carl Schneider. Prince Albrecht of Prussia stayed there in 1830 . In the 20th century, the ecumenical archive of Professor Friedrich Siegmund-Schultze was temporarily housed there until it was relocated to Berlin. After the owner's death, the city of Soest bought the building in 1974 to house the city archive.

City Archives

The archive has significant holdings, especially from the Middle Ages and the early modern period . The outstanding pieces include the old and new cowhide with the Soest town charter , the Schrae , a Middle Low German legal text, and the Nequam book with colored miniatures from medieval legal life.

The building also houses the city's scientific library with 70,000 volumes. This not only has regional historical literature, but also a large old inventory. This includes 40 medieval manuscripts from the city's monasteries, as well as 81 incunabula and other medieval and early modern writings.

The Soest History Society is also based in the building.
