The Hawaiian Patriot was an oil tanker with a deadweight of 99,443 tons that exploded and sank 300 nautical miles west of Hawaii on February 24, 1977 .

history

The fully unloaded ship was on a voyage from Indonesia to Honolulu in February 1977 with a cargo of 99,000 tons of light Indonesian crude oil . On February 23, during a storm, the ship reported that it leaked oil through a crack in the hull about 300 nautical miles west of Hawaii.

About 18,000 tons of oil had leaked by the next day when the tanker caught fire and then exploded. After the Hawaiian Patriot was in flames for several hours, it sank with the rest of the cargo. One crew member was killed.

It is estimated that an oil spill of around 50,000 tons formed, which moved away from Hawaii due to the ocean current. The oil spill was merely kept under observation, but no action was taken as it was moving away from land and could not cause pollution on land. It later naturally dissolved.
