life and work

Haydar Karataş was born in 1973 in the village of Haçeli in Dersim (Tunceli), Anatolia, as the seventh child in a family of twelve. Up to the age of six he only spoke Zazaki, he only learned Turkish when he attended boarding school. He was already politically active during his time at high school in Istanbul and published his first short story in a magazine. This earned him his first arrest.

Haydar Karataş was involved in a left-wing organization and was thrown in prison in 1992, where he spent a total of ten years and four months. The writing helped him get through prison time. From 1996 to 2000 he wrote the novel »Nachtfalter«. However, all records were confiscated.

After his release, he emigrated to Switzerland in 2003, where he has lived and worked ever since. After a visit from his mother in 2007, he succeeded in reconstructing the novel, which is based on the life story of his mother and grandmother. In 2010 "Gece Kelebeği" (moth) was published in Turkish. The fairy tales contained therein are a reminiscence of the stories told by his parents every evening, the plot and dialogues reflect the traditions, rituals and everyday culture of the native Dersim of his childhood.

»Nachtfalter« is the second book in a trilogy. The first volume called "On İki Dağın Sırrı" (The Secret of the Twelve Mountains) was published in 2012 in Turkish.
