Hozat (from Armenian Xozat - "harvested or fallow field") is a town and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the eastern Anatolian province of Tunceli . The city is 49 kilometers by road (as the crow flies: 28 km as the crow flies) west of the provincial capital Tunceli .

Before 1938, Hozat was the center of Dersim Province . Today the second smallest district is in the west of the province and has no external borders with other provinces. In the north it borders on the Ovacık district , in the west on the central district ( Merkez ) of the capital Tunceli, in the south on the Pertek district and in the west on the Çemişgezek district .

In the north of the district are mountains with a height of 2500 m (Yılan Dağı and Sarı Saltık). Towards Pertek the altitude drops to 1000 m above sea level. Zaza and Kurmanji are the most common languages ​​in the county. Armenian was once also common.

In addition to the district town (66% of the district's population), the district consists of 28 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 83 inhabitants, the scale of the population ranges from 226 (İn) down to 1. The village Boydaş is thus also the smallest of all 364 villages in the Province. Twelve villages have more inhabitants than the average (= 83).
