Pertek is a city in the province of Tunceli in Turkey and at the same time the administrative seat (İlçe Merkez ) of the district of the same name ( Ilçe ). This is located in the south of the province on the border with Elazığ Province , with the Keban reservoir forming a natural border. The Pertek district has over 10,000 inhabitants and the trend is decreasing. A good half (2018: 56.78%) of the district's population lives in the city of Pertek. According to the city seal, Pertek was elevated to Belediye (municipality) in 1885 .
In addition to the county seat, the district consists of 45 villages ( Köy ) with a total population of 5,043 inhabitants. On average, 112 people live in each village, most of them in Pınarlar (Pertek) (365 inh.). Well-known villages in the district are Akdemir (231) and Demirsaban (89 pop.). 20 villages have more than 112 (= average) inhabitants. At 13.6, the population density is above the average for the province (11.6 inh. Per km²).
Zaza and Kurmanji are the most common languages in the county.
The old town of Pertek is sunk in the Keban reservoir. The fortress Pertek - the namesake - protrudes on an island in the middle of the reservoir. The new town of Pertek is about four kilometers from the bank of the reservoir. From here there is a ferry connection to Elazığ .
The name Pertek is derived from the Armenian word for fortress Pert / Pertag and means "small fortress". According to Evliya Çelebi , the name of the fortress is derived from a statue of an imperial eagle , which was called Pertenek in Mongolian . The statue stood on the top of the fortress.
