Ovacık (also Zerenik or Pulur , from Armenian plur - "hill") is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the eastern Anatolian province of Tunceli . The city of Ovacık is located on a plain north of the Munzur-Vadisi National Park and about 65 kilometers by road (linear distance: 40 km) northwest of the provincial capital Tunceli . The name Ovacık, from Turkish Ova for level, results from this location, with Ovacık as a diminutive for small level. The traditional name Pulur comes from the Armenian word for hill.
The district is located in the northeast of the province and borders the Pülümür districts in the east and Hozat in the south, and the central district ( Merkez ) in the southeast. The province of Erzincan forms the outer border in the north and west .
The second largest district in the province consists of the district town (45.21% of the district population) and 62 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 62 residents. 22 villages have more than 62 (= average) inhabitants. The population ranges from 327 ( Koyungölü ) to 10 ( Kozluca ). With a population density of 5.0, Ovacık County is the second most sparsely populated (provincial average: 11.6 inh. Per km²).
