Çemişgezek ( Armenian Չմշկածագ Čmškacag , Ottoman چمشکزک, also called Melkişî ) is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Eastern Anatolian province of Tunceli . The place is about 117 km by road (55 km as the crow flies) west of the provincial capital Tunceli and has been a Belediye (municipality) since 1881 according to the city seal .

The place was named after the Byzantine emperor Johannes Tzimiskes . Johannes Tzimiskes comes from an Armenian dynasty and ruled in the 10th century. Its name itself is derived from the Armenian term tschemschkik , which means small .
Zaza and Kurmanji are the most common languages ​​in the county.

The district is located in the west of the province and borders in the east and northeast on the district of Hozat and in the southeast on the district of Pertek . External borders are formed by the provinces of Erzincan in the north and west and Elazığ in the south and south-west. A natural border is the Keban reservoir in the south .

The most important river is the Tağar Çayı , which comes from the district town and flows into the reservoir. The most important elevations are the Pilav Tepe, Bozan Tepe, Kırklar Tepesi and the Yılan Dağ (2950 m). The terrain slopes down from north to south. The north of the district is part of the Munzur Mountains . There are many levels around the city. Çemişgezek has lost a lot of agricultural land due to the reservoir, 14 villages were completely flooded and 12 partially flooded.

In addition to the district town (42% of the district population), the district consists of 34 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 142 inhabitants. The scale of the population ranges from 504 ( Sarıbalta ) to 19 (Aşağıdemirbük), ten villages have more than the average (= 142) inhabitants. Like most of the districts in the province, the district has had a declining population since 2013, the population density of 9.8 inh. Per km² is just below the provincial value of 11.6.
