As a Class of Athens 581 (English Class of Athens 581 ) is a class Attic - black-figure vases from the first quarter of the 5th century BC. Chr., Which belong closely together in form and decoration, but were painted by several different vase painters .

The name goes back to John D. Beazley , who built on the preparatory work by Emilie Haspels . Beazley assigned the marathon painter to the class , the group from Brussels A 1311 and ten classes, which he numbered from I to X, the group V he called the Kalinderu group , the group VII painter from Athens 9690 . He ascribed some lekythas from different classes to the painter of Athens in 581 . In 1971 he made a distinction between the painter from Munich 1874 , the Geron group and a few other subgroups.

The painters of the class almost exclusively decorated lekyths , which have come down to us in very large numbers, as well as a few skyphoi . The quality of the vases is not particularly high. The shoulders of the lekyths of this class are decorated with palmettes , buds or rays. The figure representations are mostly fleeting. In the background of the picture, leafy branches are often shown, which fill the picture. In many cases the lekyths are only decorated with a lotus plamette frieze. The style of the class leads to the Haimon painter .
