A marathon painter is an Attic vase painter who worked in the black-figure style in the first quarter of the 5th century BC. Was active. He only painted lekyths .

The name goes back to Emilie Haspels , John D. Beazley assigned him to his class of Athens 581 . It received its emergency name from the many lekyths from his hand that were found in the tumulus of the fallen Athenian warriors from the battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Were found. These vases are thus a fixed point for the dating of the Attic vases. The forms of his lekyths appear quite ancient, they taper evenly towards the foot. His early vases, including those from Marathon , generally show the pictures in a white-ground style , but on a clay ground . His way of working mostly corresponds to the rather weaker quality of the entire class. Nevertheless, he shows a certain sense of color and ornamentation . Sometimes the marathon painter shows ornamental ribbons on the necks and lower bodies of his vases. In the tradition of the Edinburgh painter, the image fields of his vases are primed white, but at times largely left with a clay background. They are often used very variably by him.
