Artur Hazelius
Artur Immanuel Hazelius (born November 30, 1833 in Stockholm ; † May 27, 1901 ibid) was a Swedish philologist and ethnographer . He became known as the founder of the Nordic Museum and the Skansen Open Air Museum in Stockholm.
Life
Arthur's father was an officer and politician and his mother came from a noble Swedish family. After his education at the University of Uppsala Artur was able to obtain a doctorate in philology in 1860 . He then worked for a time as a teacher and lecturer for the higher teachers' college in Stockholm. He then wrote several textbooks on spelling.
Hazelius' interest in ethnography was aroused in his childhood. His father believed that young Hazelius should get to know all regions of his country. So he let Artur make several trips to relatives all over Sweden. Artur got to know a variety of folk costumes and put on a collection of objects from the various ethnic groups. This Scandinavian ethnographic collection formed the cornerstone of the Nordic Museum after it was handed over to the Swedish state by Hazelius in 1880. Hazelius also contributed some exhibits from his collection to the world exhibition in Paris .
After that, Hazelius became interested in older farmhouses. He bought various buildings and had the world's second open-air museum built on a hill on the Stockholm island of Djurgården in 1891 . He was inspired by the open-air museum in Oslo (then Kristiania), which was inaugurated in 1881 by King Oskar II . Skansen quickly became popular in the Swedish capital. Hazelius also wanted to have an educational effect and showed the entire Swedish culture.
After Hazelius' wife, Sofia Elisabet, died in 1874, Hazelius withdrew more and more from the public. He spent his last years in self-chosen solitude in a house on the Skansen grounds. His final resting place is also in the open-air museum.
