The Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) is an umbrella association of environmental and health organizations that deals with the health effects of environmental changes in the European Union (EU). The non-profit organization founded in 2004 is based in Brussels . Topics include environmental prevention of chronic diseases , dangerous chemicals (e.g. pesticides ), climate change and energy, air quality , noise pollution , mercury , environmental justice and social inequality .

history

Within the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA), a section was created in 2003 to deal with environmental issues. This resulted in HEAL in 2004.

Members and partners

The association comprises (as of the beginning of 2017) over 70 member organizations that operate internationally or Europe-wide, but also nationally or locally. Organizations from 20 European countries are represented. Members mainly include environmental and / or health organizations (e.g. Natural England , Pesticide Action Network , Stand Up to Cancer , Women in Europe for a Common Future ), but also scientific organizations and institutions (e.g. the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine ). A board of directors oversees the implementation of the annual program and the priorities of HEAL activities.

The association is a partner of the Global Climate and Health Alliance and the Healthy Energy Initiative , an accredited stakeholder of the UNFCCC , and u. a. Member of Green 10 , the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), and the WHO working groups on environment and health and climate change and health.

advancement

In addition to the European Union , the KR Foundation, the European Climate Foundation, the Fondation des Fondateurs, the Marisla Foundation, the Oak Foundation , the European Environment and Health Initiative and the Fairtrade Foundation are named as sponsors . Funding against the background of commercial interests is allegedly not accepted.

tasks

The association has set itself the goal of

  • monitor policies within EU institutions to identify environmental and health threats and challenges;
  • Campaign to raise health care concerns with politicians;
  • observe policy-relevant research and make it accessible;
  • facilitate public and stakeholder participation;
  • Carry out publications, conferences, workshops and trainings.

Reports

The association publishes regular reports that summarize the status quo on certain key issues. In 2013 HEAL published a report on the health consequences of coal-fired power plants and their follow-up costs. According to this, more than 18,200 people die prematurely across the EU every year as a result of pollution from coal-fired power plants (approx. 2,700 in Germany). The economic costs of the damage to health were estimated at 42.8 billion euros per year in the EU and between 2.3 and 6.4 billion euros in Germany. A report published jointly with WWF and Climate Action Network Europe in summer 2016 found 23,000 premature deaths in Europe and additional costs for health systems of around 60 billion euros.
