Occurrence

The species occurs in Central and Northern Europe. It colonizes dry and temperature-favored habitats with sand and loess. The animals fly from late June to September. They can be found widespread in Central Europe.

Way of life

Hedychrum rutilans parasitizes on digger wasps of the genus Philanthus . The females lay their eggs on the food supply; even while the host female is bringing food into the brood cells. If the two females meet, they behave peacefully. In addition, the golden wasp is protected by its very coarse exoskeleton and its ability to ball.
