Philanthus is a genus of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the Crabronidae family. The genus includes about 135 species. In the Palearctic 28 species are common, in Europe there are seven species, three also in Central Europe.

features

The species occurring in Europe are characterized by the slightly indented inner edges of the compound eyes. The females have a well-developed tarsal ridge on the front legs, they have no pygidial field.

Way of life

The females create their nests in small or large groups in warm sandy soils. This is done in bare places on the ground, in slightly inclined or steep to vertical surfaces. One or more cells are placed at the end of a 10 to 100 centimeter long tube. The brood is fed with different types of bees . There are some species, such as the beewolf ( Philanthus triangulum ), which specialize in the western honey bee ( Apis mellifera ), while others such as the American Philanthus bicinctus even hunt bumblebees . The range of prey also rarely includes folded wasps (Vespidae), Sphecidae , parasitic wasps ( Ichneumonidae), brackish wasps ( Braconidae) or golden wasps (Chrysididae). In addition to prey-specific species, there are also species that are not specific. Philanthus solivagus from Canada recorded prey consisting of 27 species from five families.
