Heidi Bucher

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heidi Bucher born as Adelheid Hildegard Müller (born March 23, 1926 in Winterthur ; † 1993 in Brunnen ) was a Swiss artist whose interest lay in the exploration of architectural space and the body through sculptural interventions. Bucher attended the arts and crafts school in Zurich , where she studied with Johannes Itten and Max Bill , among others . Her work deals with private spaces, the body and individual and collective experiences.

Early work

Bucher's early works largely focus on the body. She moved to Los Angeles in the early 1970s. There she worked with her then husband and artist Carl Bucher on the Landings to Wear and Bodyshells . These large-format, wearable works blur the line between sculpture and clothing. They were featured on the front page of Harper's Bazaar . An 8mm film shows the oversized foam bodyshells in action on Venice Beach . These were also shown in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts (now the Museum of Art and Design) in New York City and in April 1972 at the LACMA .

Later work

Heidi Bucher: Fliegender Hautraum (Ancestral House), approx. 1980–1982, Winterthur

In her later work, Bucher became increasingly interested in the relationship between the body and space. She used different textiles and liquid latex with which she poured various interiors and private and personal spaces. She called these casts molting .
