Heidi Thomas

Heidi Thomas (* 1962 in Garston, Liverpool ) is a British screenwriter and playwright .

Life

Thomas graduated from Liverpool University . Immediately after finishing her studies, she won the National Youth Theater New Play Award in 1984 for her first play All Flesh is Grass . In 1985 she won the John Whiting Award for her play Shamrocks and Crocodiles .

In the 1987/1988 season her play Indigo was staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company .

She has also been writing screenplays for British television since the late 1980s. In 2007 she conceived the television series Lilies , for which she also wrote one of the scripts and acted as executive producer. From 2007 to 2009 she wrote the scripts for several episodes of the television series Cranford , which is based on the novels by Elizabeth Gaskell . This work earned her several awards, including the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award (2008), the Broadcasting Press Guild Award (2008) and the Banff Rockie Award (2008). She was also nominated for the British Academy Television Award for Best Screenwriter for her work on Cranford in 2008 and 2010 .

Thomas then wrote the scripts for the television series Return to the House on Eaton Place , before working on the script implementation of Jennifer Worth's memoir. The TV series Call the Midwife based on it has been running on the BBC since 2012. She also received several awards for Call the Midwife such as the TV Quick Award (2012), the Christopher Award (2013) and the Television and Radio Industries Club Award (2013).

Her marriage to actor Stephen McGann in 1990 had a son. The family lives in Saffron Walden .
