The Heiligenberg Tunnel is a 195 meter long railway tunnel in the Thuringian district of Eichsfeld , which lies on the Leinefelde – Treysa railway line , which opened in 1880 . This belonged to the Kanonenbahn and has been shut down for regular operation since 1998.
The Heiligenberg Tunnel was built between 1878 and 1879. It is located between the train stations Effelder in the north and Großbartloff in the south. The curve radius of the tunnel is 400 meters, the continuous gradient 1:96 and the average altitude about 329 m above sea level. NN .
The tunnel is only partially located in the slate marl of the Röt, for the most part in slipped shell limestone with anhydrite deposits, which are only poorly stable. The geological conditions are the worst here. The coverage of the tunnel is only ten to twelve meters, so that a cut would have been sufficient. However, this was refrained from because of the slope that tends to slide .
The structure is part of the railway line from Lengenfeld unterm Stein to Küllstedt , which today can be ridden by handcar and bike along the Kanonenbahn cycle path .
