The first editor was the then district administrator , member of the Saarland state parliament and later Minister Paul Schütz , who gave the first volume an emphatic , homeland-transfigured foreword. The later Minister-President of the Saarland , Werner Zeyer , who was District Administrator of the St. Wendel district from 1961 to 1972, is also among the editors .

An annual volume was published in 1948, 1949 and 1950. Since 1951/52 the Heimatbuch has been published mostly in two-year, but more recently also in three or four years.

In the early years, drawings by Mia Münster contributed to the graphic design .
