Heine Stupp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heine Stupp (* 1875 in Cologne , † 1955 in Kronberg im Taunus ) was a German extreme athlete who gained fame by walking around the world. He previously traveled on foot through southern Germany , Austria-Hungary , Italy , Belgium and the Netherlands . The trigger for this record attempt was a bet by an American company. As part of this bet, the two Americans Gost Koegel and Fred Thoerner set off around the world. In Munich, Heine Stupp joined these two. On July 31, 1895, he started his world record attempt from Munich . Heine Stupp circumnavigated the world within 492 days. On December 5, 1896, he returned to Munich. The two Americans set out from San Francisco on June 10, 1894 and reached their starting point at the end of June 1896. Fred Thoerner had to interrupt the hike due to an injury to his knee that he sustained in Romania . He only met Heine Stupp and Gost Koegel again in Calcutta .

From today's perspective, however, this hike around the world cannot be counted as a record. Heine Stupp describes in his diary that he used means of transport various times on his trip. Stupp's diary also contains places and the associated travel data that cannot be managed without using transport. For example, he states that they will arrive in Hong Kong on April 21, 1896. Only ten days later, on May 1, 1896, they arrive in Shanghai. The air line distance between Hong Kong and Shanghai is 1223 km. This distance cannot be covered on foot in 10 days. Similar information is given for the approx. 1250 km long route from Nagasaki (May 3, 1896) to Yokohama (May 18, 1896).
