Life

Von Hagen, who fled to West Germany at the age of 12, studied biology and Protestant theology in Bonn and Münster . His dissertation on Dr. rer. nat. In 1962 he acquired field studies on sexual and reproductive biology from Uca tangeri in Andalusia at the University of Münster. His habilitation followed in 1971 at the University of Karlsruhe . He was initially appointed professor of zoology in Karlsruhe, later he was (1974-1998) full professor at the University of Marburg . There he earned a reputation for polished rhetoric, passionate advocacy for species protection and evolutionary biology as well as a special commitment to teaching.

At the suggestion of his theological teacher Carl Heinz Ratschow, he regularly gave sermons in the Ecumenical University Devotions in Marburg from 1975-1992, and since 1986 in the Protestant St. Matthew's Church in Marburg-Ockershausen. A selection of these sermon texts is documented in a book published in 2008. The title of this volume, which is unconventional in terms of content, refers to a saying by Paul Valéry : “Surgit ventus, temptemus vivere” (A wind comes up, we try to live).
