Heinrich Stahl Prize
The Heinrich Stahl Prize was launched in 1954. It commemorates Heinrich Stahl , the chairman of the Jewish Community in Berlin from 1933 until he was abducted in 1942. The award is given to personalities “who stood up for tolerance, humanity and for exceptional help for the Jewish people persecuted by the Nazi regime of terror”.
The prize was initially endowed with 2000 DM, today it is undoped. It is awarded at irregular intervals. The suggestion for the award came from Heinz Galinski . The award ceremony usually takes place on April 19, the day on which the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto returns .

Reading of the 55,696 names of murdered Berlin Jews
On the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto and the awarding of the Heinrich Stahl Prize 2004 to the Berlin entrepreneur Hans Wall for his “courageous fight against racism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia”, the names of the 55,696 murdered Berlin Jews were read out. This reading, which has been taking place every year since 1996, was held in 2004 instead of Wittenbergplatz on Fasanenstrasse for safety reasons .
