Heinrich (VI.) The Younger of Braunschweig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich (VI.) II. The Younger of Braunschweig (* around 1196; † April 16 or 26, 1214 ) from the Guelph family was Count Palatine of the Rhineland from 1212 to 1214 .

Life

Heinrich was the only son of Count Palatine Heinrich I († 1227) and Agnes von Staufen . Since 1212 he was married to Mathilde von Brabant († 1267), daughter of Duke Heinrich I of Niederlothringen-Brabant .

He was educated at the court of King John of England and returned to Germany in 1211/1212. His father renounced the dignity of the Palatine count in his favor in 1212 for political reasons. Heinrich took part in the Aachen court day of his imperial uncle Otto IV in November 1212 , where he was probably betrothed to Mathilde von Brabant. Shortly afterwards he took the side of the Staufer Friedrich II against Otto IV. After Heinrich's early childless death, he enfeoffed the Wittelsbacher Ludwig with the Palatinate. Heinrich was buried in the Schönau monastery near Heidelberg .
