Heinrich acted as Count von Rietberg in agreement with his brother Friedrich. Along with this he took in 1111 on the journey to Rome Henry V part. The brothers stayed in close proximity to the emperor. Heinrich was part of a group of hostages sent to the papal side for security.

Around 1114, the brothers then joined the opposition to Henry V. In June 1114 the rebel army besieged the fortress of Deutz, which was occupied by the imperial family . Their command fell in the rear of the superior army of the emperor in the battle of Jülich and thus turned the outcome of the battle around. Heinrich died in the battle of the Welfesholz in 1116.
