Heinrich Bauer (* 1935 ; † February 14, 1993 ) was a German classical archaeologist .

After studying law for several years, he switched to classical archeology. With the dissertation Corinthian capitals of the 4th and 3rd centuries BC Chr. He was in Marburg in 1967 Henry Drerup doctorate . Already in this work his own method of recovering monuments believed to be lost from the smallest fragments through systematic measurement, meticulous cataloging and precise drawing, became clearly recognizable. This systematic approach enabled him to present convincing reconstructions of various ancient monuments, including the Lysicrates Monument in Athens , which had not been considered possible for a long time. Throughout his life he remained a surveying archaeologist and plan analyst who always carried out his projects alone and without outside help. His main area of work was Rome , where he also lived.

His central research object was the Basilica Aemilia in the Roman Forum . Heinrich Bauer succeeded in a detailed reconstruction of its facade to the forum and its interior design by systematically recording the structural elements that were kept in the stone store built by Corrado Ricci. Further fields of research were a complete survey of the ancient sewers running underground in Rome and the uncovering, measurement and reconstruction of the entrance exedra to the Augustus Forum . His unexpected death during a mountain hike in Abruzzo prevented the publication of numerous further first and new measurements of Roman monuments.
