Margrave Heinrich II. , Called the Younger (* 1103 ; † 1123 ) was Count of Eilenburg and from 1103 Margrave of Meissen and Lusatia , from the Wettin family .

Life

Heinrich was probably born posthumously in 1103 as the son of Heinrich I the Elder and Gertrude the Younger of Braunschweig . After the death of her husband, she claimed the Margraviate of Meissen for her unborn child, and when the pregnancy was doubted because of her advanced age, she tore her clothes off in front of the crowd and showed her belly as proof. Her enemies spread the news that she had given birth to a girl and exchanged her for the cook's son in order to take over the reign.

Under the tutelage of his mother, Heinrich II was able to take control of his paternal legacy, Meissen and Lausitz . His cousin Conrad the Great continued to question the legality . After the death of his mother Gertrud (1117) and the coming of age, Margrave Heinrich II announced the feud to his cousin Konrad and took him prisoner in 1121. Konrad von Wettin remained his prisoner until Heinrich II's death. At the beginning of 1123 Heinrich II fought together with his brother-in-law, Margrave Heinrich von Stade, for Bishop Reinhard von Halberstadt against Duke Lothar von Sachsen .

Heinrich II died as early as 1123 in September / October by poison. Thereupon his cousin Konrad the Great again raised claims to the Mark Meissen and Heinrichs Allode fell to Konrad, the only living male offspring of the House of Wettin. To the "completed" imperial fiefdom that margravates Meissen and Lausitz, kindled a fierce battle in the episode, because Emperor Henry V both as escheated fief to Count Wiprecht II. Von Groitzsch that Mark Eilenburg to Count Hermann von Winzenburg transferred . Count Konrad saw his rights impaired and allied himself with Duke Lothar von Sachsen (who later became emperor) against the incumbent emperor. The latter gave him back the Mark Meissen in 1125, but the Mark Eilenburg came to Albrecht von Ballenstedt , who after Wiprecht's death (1124) also seized the Mark Lausitz, but ceded the Mark Eilenburg to Konrad.
