Heinrich Klein (inventor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Klein (born May 18, 1919 in Riegel am Kaiserstuhl ; † July 31, 2011 in Dortmund ) was a German civil engineer and inventor of the goal wall .

Career

As a pioneer , Klein lost his left lower leg in the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944 and therefore wore a prosthesis . The right leg was shot through eight times. In 1954, Klein became technical director of the Dortmund Westfalenhallen . In this function, he had the task of organizing celebrity competitions for the annual West German Sports Press Festival. The initial idea of shooting a goalkeeper in a handball goal from a distance of eleven meters was quickly abandoned, as the goalkeeper could hardly be overcome from this distance. Klein replaced the goalkeeper with a chipboard , in which he sawed two circular holes at the top left and bottom right. The sports journalists Werner Schneider and Wim Thoelke , then members of the West German sports press, took the idea with the ZDF , where the goal wall since 1963 an integral part of the program the current sports studio is.

On April 17, 1991, Klein received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his commitment to disabled sports.
