Pedal crank by Heinrich Mylius (1845)

Heinrich Mylius (born September 5, 1813 in Friedrichsthal , † June 29, 1892 in Cleveland ) was a German mechanic, dialect poet and designer of the first pedal crank bicycle . In 1845 Heinrich Mylius is said to have built a two-wheeler in Themar that was equipped with cranks on the front wheel even before the Fischer crank wheel (1853). However, the date is considered disputed. Compared to the Fischer wheel, the peculiar rear fork stands out, which speaks for an older year of manufacture. The drag brake on the rear wheel could be operated via a lever arm , the handlebar was horizontal. It cannot be ruled out that Mylius and Fischer knew each other; both lived only about 80 km apart. The original is now in the vehicle museum in Suhl . Heinrich Mylius fled to America during the revolution of 1848/1849 .
