life and work

Heinrich Schumacher was born on the remote Ripperterhof near Ramsen, attended grammar school in Speyer and studied Catholic theology in Innsbruck . Bishop Konrad von Busch ordained him as a priest on July 28, 1907 in Speyer. Schumacher took up the post of Konviktprefekten on September 2nd under Rector Ludwig Nagel at the Episcopal Konvikt St. Joseph - also jokingly called the "Seppelskasten" by the students.

On August 14, 1911, the young priest went to Landau as a chaplain . Because of his theological and scientific talent he was sent to the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome for further studies and a doctorate . There he received his doctorate in theology and in 1912 became vice rector at the priestly college of the German national foundation Santa Maria dell'Anima . William Turner , who later became Bishop of Buffalo NY, with whom Schumacher was on friendly terms, brought him to the USA , where he taught as a professor at the Catholic University in Washington, DC from autumn 1913. His areas of expertise were New Testament exegesis , patrology and early church history . His many years of teaching resulted in several theological books that were published in German, English and other languages. Schumacher achieved worldwide fame as a theologian and church historian. The obituary states that he was often visiting Germany "where he had many friends, right up to the former Bavarian royal family." After the Second World War , he helped the old homeland a lot materially from America.

In February 1949 the clergyman fell ill with cancer and died of it half a year later after a severe sick bed. He found his final resting place in a priestly cemetery in Buffalo. At the funeral service, u. a. two bishops, several university professors and 88 other priests participated. His home diocese of Speyer dedicated a detailed obituary to him in 1949 in the diocese newspaper “ Der Pilger ”, as well as in the 1951 pilgrim calendar (yearbook of the diocese). Heinrich Schumacher also has an entry in Viktor Carl's "Lexicon of Palatinate Personalities".
