Heinrich Theobald Schenk

Heinrich Theobald Schenk (also: Schenck ; born April 10, 1656 in Heidelbach (Alsfeld) ; † April 11, 1727 in Gießen ) was a German Protestant theologian and hymn composer.

Life

Heinrich Theobald Schenk is the son of the then pastor in Heidelbach Simon Schenk and his wife Barbara (née Rümplin, from Waldhausen). In 1670 he attended the grammar school in Giessen and in 1672 began studying at the University of Giessen . Here he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy in 1676 and in the same year became a teacher at the Giessen high school. In 1677 he took over the office of major of the princely scholarship holders and rose to definitor and city preacher in 1698, which office he held until the end of his life. Schenk is best known for his hymn "Who are they before God's thrones?", Which Johann Jakob Rambach recorded in his Hesse-Darmstadt hymnal.

From his marriage in 1678 to Marie Susanne, the daughter of the Nassauisch Weilburg inspector and pastor in Kirchhain M. Johann Stech, five daughters and one son emerged. Are known:
