Heinrich Wagner (linguist)

Heinrich Hans Wagner (* 1923 in Zurich ; † 1988 ) was a Swiss linguist , Celtologist and professor at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies .

Life

Wagner studied Indo-European , Old German and Celtology at the University of Zurich from 1941 to 1945 . In 1945 he traveled to Ireland for the first time. In Dublin he learned to master the Celtic dialects of Ireland, later he wrote the Linguistic Atlas and Survey of Irish Dialects, which is still considered a standard work today . In Zurich he was in 1948 with the work "On the origin of ē-verbs in the Indo-European languages, with particular reference to the Germanic formations" doctorate . Wagner is considered to be Julius Pokorny's most important student .
