Heinsius is an impact crater in the southwest of the front of the moon , south of Mare Nubium , northwest of Tycho crater and northeast of Wilhelm . The irregularly shaped crater is severely eroded and overlaid by secondary craters, especially in the southwestern part.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the German astronomer Gottfried Heinsius .
