Heinz Joachim Held

Heinz Joachim Held (born May 16, 1928 in Wesseling ) is a German Protestant theologian and former president of the ecclesiastical external office of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and foreign bishop.

Life

Held is a son of the former President of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland, Heinrich Held . He attended the Goethe School in Essen and from 1947 studied Protestant theology at the Church College in Wuppertal and at the Universities of Göttingen , Heidelberg and Bonn . In 1951 he passed the theological exam. In 1952/53 he continued his studies as a fellow of the World Council of Churches at the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Texas. 1957 followed the doctorate with Günther Bornkamm . Held was parish priest in the Ev. Church in the Rhineland before he was appointed President of the Evangelical Church on La Plata in 1968 . During this time he was a member of the central committee of the World Council of Churches, a member of the editorial committee of Martin Luther's works in Spanish translation and chairman of the board of trustees of the Evangelical College for Theological Studies in Buenos Aires.

On February 1, 1975, Held moved to the head of the EKD's external church office (until 1993). From 1983 to 1991 he was also chairman of the central committee of the World Council of Churches .
