Adolf Wischmann

Adolf Wischmann (born October 17, 1908 in Brockel , † October 27, 1983 in Rotenburg (Wümme) ) was an Evangelical-Lutheran theologian and head of the external office of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).

Life

Adolf Wischmann, pastor's son from Brockel, attended grammar school in Osnabrück , studied theology and served as student pastor in Göttingen from 1936 to 1948 . During the Nazi era he was a member of the Confessing Church . In 1939 he was drafted into military service. In 1948 he became director of the Evangelical Academy in Hermannsburg (since December 1952 in Loccum), and in 1954 the state superintendent of the district of Osnabrück . In 1956 he followed Martin Niemöller as head of the EKD external office in Frankfurt am Main . He was thus bishop of the approx. 450 Protestant pastors abroad of the church parishes and communities affiliated with the EKD in around 40 countries. He was an advisory board member of the Presidium of the Conference of European Churches , a member of the central committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC), chairman of the finance committee of the WCC, a member of the advisory committee of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and of the advisory group of the Protestant churches in Europe to the European Community . He paid particular attention to the talks with the Orthodox Church in Russia and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople . Among other things, Wischmann led the theological talks between the Russian Orthodox Church and the EKD.

He was also a member of the Brother Council of the EKD , the Central Line West of the Gustav-Adolf-Werk and the Broadcasting Council of Deutsche Welle. Wischmann retired in 1974, but kept the chairmanship of the Evangelical Lutheran until 1981. Deaconess Mother House Bethanien (Lötzen) in Quakenbrück, which he had taken over from Paul Kaufmann in 1955.

Wischmann died in October 1983 and was buried in Rotenburg / Wümme.
