Heinz Koehn

Heinz Köhn (* 1902 ; † 1962 ) was a German art historian .

Life

Köhn worked as an art historian in Essen . As the successor to the art historian Klaus Graf von Baudissin , whose assistant he was previously, Köhn was director of the Folkwang Museum in Essen from 1938 to 1962 . After the Second World War , Köhn began restoring the collection of the Folkwang Museum, which had lost many works of art in 1937. According to Köhn, 17 paintings by foreign artists such as Munch , Cézanne and Matisse were confiscated in 1937 and 89 paintings by German painters. Among them were the famous Red Horses by Franz Marc (now in the Harvard Art Museum ). There were also 242 drawings and watercolors, 350 prints, Emil Nolde's entire graphic work and nine sculptures. In total, the Folkwang lost around 1400 works, around half of its total inventory. Köhn died in 1962, followed a year later by Paul Vogt as director of the Folkwang Museum.
