Heinz Münchow (born April 16, 1920 ) is a former major general of the People's Police . For many years he was head of the district authorities of the German People's Police (BDVP) in the Neubrandenburg and Potsdam districts, and from 1970 to 1972 he was head of the protective police in the Ministry of the Interior of the GDR .

Life

After attending elementary school, Münchow learned the trade of pottery.

In 1945 he became a police officer in the Soviet occupation zone and joined the SED in 1946 . He became an officer of the German People's Police (DVP) and, after the districts were formed in the GDR, was the first chief of the district authority of the German People's Police in Neubrandenburg with the rank of VP inspector from 1952 to 1955 . When the district organization Neubrandenburg of the sports association Dynamo was founded on May 8, 1953, he was elected first chairman of the district board. He held this position until his transfer to Potsdam in 1955. From 1955 to 1970 he was head of the BDVP Potsdam, since 1957 in the rank of colonel of the VP. At the same time he was from 1960 to 1970 member of the SED district leadership and 1963-1971 deputy of the District Day Potsdam. In August 1961, Münchow belonged to the Potsdam District Operations Management, which was responsible for the smooth operation of the border closure, in addition to the then 1st Secretary of the SED district leadership Kurt Seibt and the head of the MfS district administration Lieutenant Colonel Rudi Mittig . Despite the border security, the number of border breaches increased. Therefore, on August 20, 1961, Münchow demanded a clear regulation on the use of firearms by the border police.

On June 30, 1969, he was appointed major general by the Chairman of the National Defense Council of the GDR , Walter Ulbricht , and from 1970 to 1972 he was head of the main police department in the Ministry of the Interior of the GDR (successor to Colonel VP Willi Knöpke ). After his retirement he lived in Eichwalde .
