Heinz Opitz

Heinz Opitz (born January 10, 1928 ) is a former German officer in the People's Police . He was major general and from 1983 to 1989 head of the readiness department in the Ministry of the Interior (MdI) of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) .

Life

Opitz became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) , a member of the German People's Police and started an officer career.

From 1983 to 1989 he was Heinz Eichler's successor as head of the main readiness department in the MdI and responsible for barracked units of the MdI performing military service . On June 24, 1983 he was appointed major general by the chairman of the GDR's National Defense Council , Erich Honecker . In November 1989 he became secretary to Lothar Ahrendt , the Minister for Internal Affairs of the GDR, and on December 21, 1989 a member of the government commission that was supposed to carry out military reform. Opitz was dismissed from the police force in 1990.
