Thomas Aumann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Aumann is a German core physicist . He has been a professor at the Institute for Nuclear Physics at the Technical University of Darmstadt since 2010 .

Life

Aumann completed his physics studies in Mainz in 1987 with a diploma. He then did his doctorate on “two-phonon excitation” of giant resonances. Aumann spent postdoc stays at the GSI in Darmstadt and at the "National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory" at Michigan State University. Since August 2010 he has been professor for experimental nuclear physics at the TU Darmstadt. He also holds the position of Head of the Research Division ( Research Division Head ) of the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research .

In 2015, Aumann was involved in the discovery of a rare form of double gamma decay (competitive double gamma decay). In the double gamma decay , which was predicted by Maria Goeppert-Mayer , an excited state decays through the simultaneous emission of two gamma rays. Until now, however, it had only been observed when the direct gamma transition was prohibited in the first order of quantum mechanical perturbation theory. Aumann, Christopher Walz, Heiko Scheit, Norbert Pietralla , R. Lefol and V. Ponomarev succeeded in observing even with quantum mechanically permitted direct transition.

He deals with experimental nuclear physics in more than 140 scientific articles.
