Norbert Pietralla

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Norbert Andreas Pietralla (born February 23, 1967 in Kaldenkirchen ) is a German core physicist . Since 2006 he has been a professor at the Institute for Nuclear Physics at the Technical University of Darmstadt .

Life

He studied physics in Cologne, where he received his doctorate in 1996 and completed his habilitation in 2003 . Norbert Pietralla was at Duke University in Durham in the state of North Carolina and from 2003 to 2006 lecturer at Stony Brook University in New York state , USA . In 2006 he accepted a professorship for experimental particle physics at the TU Darmstadt. There he is managing director of the Institute for Nuclear Physics. Pietralla is heavily involved in the approval of the international research project Extreme Light Infrastructure .

He deals with experimental nuclear physics in more than 580 scientific articles.

In 2015, Pietralla was involved in the discovery of a rare form of double gamma decay with Thomas Aumann and Heiko Scheit. A double gamma decay takes place in competition with an ordinary gamma decay (previously, the double gamma decay was only observed if the direct decay was forbidden in the first order of quantum mechanical perturbation theory).

Norbert Pietralla is married and has two daughters.

Awards

  • 2004: Physics Prize of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen for his investigations into mixed-symmetric nuclear states
  • 2016: Special prize for interdisciplinary teaching of the TU Darmstadt for the interdisciplinary lecture series "What's behind it?" (Together with Lambert Alff)
