The Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) is a European laser research project in the preparatory phase , with which processes are to be investigated with high time resolution. The most intensive lasers in the world are to be used. Around 40 research institutions and universities from 13 EU countries are involved in the project.

The project consists of four building blocks. In Dolní Břežany , approx. 15 km south of Prague in the Czech Republic , the first column will be the ELI beamlines , which will provide ultra- short pulses of high-energy particles and radiation for experiments. For the second pillar, ELI-NP, an intensive source of gamma radiation is currently being built in Magurele southwest of Bucharest in Romania for nuclear physics experiments with a particle accelerator and a high-power laser . On March 7, 2019, an output of 10 peta watts was achieved for the first time, which proved that it was ready for use as planned. The creation of a gamma ray source is delayed. In Szeged , Hungary , the electron dynamics in atoms , molecules , plasmas and solids will be investigated with the help of attosecond pulses . The location for the fourth pillar with a 200 PW laser still to be developed has not yet been determined.

history

The preparation phase (ELI PP) lasted from November 2007 to December 2010. On December 10, 2010, leadership was officially handed over to the Delivery Consortium. The financing of the ELI beamlines was approved by the European Commission on April 20, 2011 , followed by ELI-NP (Nuclear Physics) on September 18, 2012. The ELI-DC was founded in April 2013 as an international non-profit organization under Belgian law.
