As a trainer

In 1988 he started as a trainer at Schwarz-Weiß Düren. After four years, I joined Germania Teveren in 1992 . In the very first season, the Landesliga climber succeeded in advancing to the Oberliga Nordrhein and in the following season staying in league, although the Oberliga was only fourth class from 1994 onwards due to the introduction of the Regionalliga.

In the second half of the 1995/96 season he was the coach of FC 06 Rurdorf. In 1996/97 he led SSV Körrenzig to promotion to the Association League. During the 1999/2000 season he took over the coaching position at FC Rurdorf for a second time and was relieved of it in the following season.

When he was a coach at Borussia Freialdenhoven , Otten was undone by a new regulation, according to which coaches working in the league must have an A license that Otten did not have. Possible trainer courses were fully booked for a longer period of time and the association did not accept an interim solution. For Otten, the BC Oberzier was the next stop, where he later worked again as the department head of popular sports. In the meantime he coached Germania Dürwiß from 2004 to 2006.
